HELP ALERT 05.17.07 REPRESENTATIVE CANNON PROMISES TO VOTE AGAINST PARENTAL RIGHTS. In an e-mail we received today, House Rep Ben Cannon, (who initially voted in favor of parental autonomy on SB 392 and then reversed his vote) declared his intention to support the bill when it reaches the House floor. SB 392 forces children into government schools a year earlier than current law requires. In order to kill this bill on the House floor, supporters of parent's rights would need all the Republicans and at least two Democrats. We had hoped that Cannon might be one of those Democrats, and now it is clear he will not be. This makes stopping this bill considerably more difficult. Cannon said in his e-mail to us: "I am satisfied with the amendment. It was important to me that we establish a process whereby families could apply not to enroll their six-year-old. In general, however, I support mandatory schooling, and it seems very reasonable to me that six be the minimum age in ordinary circumstances. I will be a "yes" vote on the floor. Yours sincerely, Ben Cannon" Note Cannon's support for "mandatory schooling" and a process where you could "apply" to make a decision about your own child.
